And, Before I Forget: A Musical Interlude
I failed to blog last week that we attended the Chandler Gilbert Community College production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!.
Why attend a community college production, you ask?
Because the fetching, lovely, and oh-so-talented Miss J was the star of the show!
Miss J played Laurey, the female lead, and just owned the stage. Blew it away. Awesome. Breathtaking. All those tired adjectives.
Now, I admit being just a wee bit opinionated. I think Miss J hung the moon, as the old folks might say. But she really, truly, no shit, was really really really good.
Now, if I can just get her and her electric piano interested in playing a little Trop Rock.....maybe some Volcano, or Pencil Thin Mustache? Just try and tell me Miss J would not be incredible singing Nadira Shakur's part on Son of a Son of A Sailor:
Salt for your meat, and cinnamon sweet, and rum for all your good vices.....
I've always avoided learning Pencil Thin Mustache on the ol' six-string. For me, it's just a tough song to learn, and it doesn't suit my voice all that well (as though anything does) in the original Buffett arrangements I have on hand.
But then the Rocket Man sent me a shitload of arrangements just before the Round Robin last weekend, among which was Pencil Thin Mustache in the key of C. So, what the hell? I tried it, and it works for me. It's still hard to play....I have some sort of mental aversion to fingering a D minor guitar chord, but I'm getting there. Thanks to the Rocket Man.
