Parrothead Primer, Part II

All right, Buffett Virgins, gather 'round and let the Crime Dog uplift and edify your inexperienced asses again today.

What kind of music does Jimmy play, you ask? Hell if I know. Even Jimmy has trouble categorizing it. It's rock/pop/country/calypso/reggae/zydeco,cajun music. In other words, it's just Buffett Music. OK, we all know Jimmy scored big doing songs with some shitkickers over the past couple of years, but most Parrotheads will blend you up with some cheap tequila if you even suggest their hero is a country singer. He's country influenced, but hell, so were The Eagles. Try calling those guys country. More often than not, Jimmy's country-ish sounding songs are more about poking fun at country than they are about being, well, country.

The fetching Mrs Crime Dog said it best last year at Texas Stadium, when we went to the Jackson/Strait/Buffett concert. It was hotter than a two-dicked dog in that place, no air movement whatsoever, and George Strait was performing. That is, if you can call what he does performing. All due respect to you Strait fans out there, but what is with that dude's stage act? He reminds me of one of those animatronic singing bears at Disneyland. Dammit, I wanna see a show! Anyway, the fetching Mrs Crime Dog finally had enough of that. She stood up in the middle of George's show, and announced the following:

I can take this kind of heat for Jimmy, but not for any *%$#@+! country singer!

And promptly walked out and got herself some fresh air and a cold adult beverage. Came back just as Jimmy was about to take the stage. Is she cool or what?

So, virgins, don't try categorizing it. It won't work. Wanna know what he'll be singing? Glad you asked. Here's the setlist from Tuesday's Santa Barbara show, and it probably won't change much:

Hot Hot Hot/Survivor Theme

1. Piece of Work 15. Why Don't We Get Drunk 2. Stars on the Water 16. La Vie Dansante
3. Coconut Telegraph 17. Lighthouses
4. Hey Good Looking 18. Banana Republics
5. Ragtop Day 19. Everybody's Talkin'
6. Come Monday 20. Southern Cross
7. Diamond as big as the Ritz 21. Coast of Carolina
8. Woman Goin' Crazy on Caroline Street 22. School Boy Heart
9. License to Chill 23. One Particular Harbour
10. Horizon Has Been Defeated 24. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere
11. Changes in Latitudes 25. Margaritaville
12. Cheeseburger in Paradise First Encore:
13. Volcano 26. Scarlet Begonias
14. Brown Eyed Girl 27. Fins
Final Encore:
Intermission 28. A Pirate looks at Forty

What's that you say? Most of these aren't on the one CD you own with that red cover? Better learn to fake it, for there are two absolute standards at concerts:

Nobody sits down
Everybody sings along

Just look for me in the parking lot. I know 'em all, and will be happy to share that knowledge with you. But Rule 6 may apply!

Tomorrow: What's the deal with all those fins?
