Ask The Crime Dog

Our good and loyal friend Wastnawa asks today:

Hey, Crime Dog! Why is it that people on their way into the health club spend time getting a parking space close to the door?

Ahh, yes. This question has been around since the very inception of health clubs. Or cars, I forget which. An alternate question might be, "why do they have escalators in health clubs?" Another good question, especially considering some nimrod is going to ride that escalator up the gym, then get on the stairstepper when he arrives.

Maybe it's a power thing. If I get a space closer than you did, regardless of where we're going, then I'm just a little bitty bit superior. Sort of like the jerk who darts ahead of you when you're trying to get on the freeway in backed up traffic. You know when you see that car coming alongside, you hurry and close the space between you and the guy ahead. Can't let that bastard get the upper hand, right?

Or maybe it's that some people really don't go to the gym to work out. It's more of a social thing. I know when I see thin people at the gym, I wonder just what the hell they're doing there. Hell, if I was thin, I wouldn't go to the gym. I'd go eat something.

But I digress.

I'm sure there are people who go to the gym to hook up, or to check out the chicks. Especially that creepy guy who spends hours on one machine - the one right across from the adductor machine. You think he wants to waste time walking across the damn parking lot?
