Eric Strikes Again!

As seems to often be the case, Eric was all over today's "Who The Hell Is That?" posting. I'll find a way eventually to slide one by that dude!

Yep, that's Lord Buckley (1904-1960), who wrote and recorded God's Own Drunk decades before Jimmy covered it on Living and Dying In 3/4 Time. Interestingly, Buckley's son, Richard Buckley Jr., sued Buffett in 1982 for copyright infringement, apparently over Jimmy's You Had To Be There version of the song/story. Though Buffett had paid royalties for years, Buckley Jr. charged that Jimmy's use of profanity, drug references, and "immoral content" on his live version gave a "false impression" of his father and was "defamatory and malicious."

Never mind that Buckley himself was an infamous pot smoker, allegedly known for getting stoned on stage during shows (just what is that in Buckley's left hand in today's photo?) And also never mind that they allowed it be recorded by a guy who ALREADY sang Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw, fuck all those West Nashville ballroom gowns, spending it all on grass, and My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, And I Don't Love Jesus. The suit was dismissed.

But while it was ongoing, Jimmy was known to give the plaintiff lawyer's phone number out to his concert audiences, encouraging them to call him and tell him what they all thought about the suit. Nothing like getting 50,000 phone calls a week telling you you're an asshole, eh counselor?
