The Parrotheads Do It Again!
Ever have one of those weekends where you actually need day off to rest up from it? That was this one for me. Actually, a week would serve me a little better, but then I would take the remainder of my life off if I could. Since retirement is about money, not age, I guess I'll keep working for a while. I'll probably be one of those guys who keels over at his desk one day, and they just box my ass up and haul me off to start pushin' up the daisies in the ol' boneyard.
But before that happens, I gotta tell you about the Salsa Challenge. It was good phriends, good music, fantastic salsa, and great fun, with the Arizona Parrothead Club easily being the mostest funnest. We put a little piece of Margaritaville right there in the Tempe Beach Park. Now, for those of you who are from out of town, and/or may be a bit geographically impaired, Tempe ain't on the ocean. Oh, there's a sandy beach, to be sure. Central Arizona is one gigantic sandy beach. There's just no ocean to go with it. The Beach Park is on Tempe Town Lake, which looks something like this when you dress it up right.
We all had a terrific time, raised a lot of money for the Hemophilia Association, and even won a couple of new awards to add to the board! Not only did our Shark Bite Salsa win second in its category, but together we managed to once again win the highly-coveted "Best In Show" award. What could you expect though? We had 'em literally dancin' in the streets with the very best in Jimmy Buffett tunes, the Flamingo Queens, and yours truly manning the mike. Of course, I have an ulterior motive for taking the microphone all day until I was hoarse: First, of course, I crave attention. But I'm also hoping to soon embark on a new career, guessin' people's weights or barkin' for the yak woman.
We must have handed out fifty new membership applications on Saturday. People saw us having a great time and just wanted to be a part of it, I guess. Here's hoping that all of those who took applications will actually join, and not use them for.......well, let's just hope they join.
We had a couple of parakeets making their Parrothead debuts at The Challenge: Baby Brooklyn, my very own grand-parakeet, and The Jello Shot Prince and Princess' little Prince-In-Training, Stephen. Both were fan favorites as they hit the scene in their strollers. And what's with these strollers people use these days? The things are built like Hummers and have about as much room. I'm pretty sure I saw one on a news clip from Iraq, in camo colors with like five marines in it and a turret gun on top. We raised three kids with the same raggedy-ass umbrella stroller. Of course, we never owned a car large enough to carry one these modern contraptions, anyway.
We met a few other enchanting parakeets on Saturday, as well. My personal favorite was the adorable little girl who asked if we could play Delaney Talks To Statues. Of course, you only have to tell Rick The Pirate once. On came their song, and both Daddy and Daughter were moving their feet. Watch out, Dad: Before you realize what happened, you'll be dancing with her at her wedding to that same song. You can trust me on that one. With me, it was Little Miss Magic.
Speaking of Jimmy tunes, we're only about three weeks out from the Big Show. I'm working on a parking lot party, so stay tuned here for more details!
