The Best Albums You Never Heard
Mark Mulligan's latest offering is simply a treat. The same smooth vocals you've grown to enjoy are there, with that trop-rock slant that plays so well around the pool or with some friends and cervezas. But there's more here - much more. This album is an affirmation in many ways of Mark's love of spouse, life, home, family, and even God - "The man I gotta see."
The trop-rocker in all of us will have a great time with the covers of Rob Mehl's Don't It Make You Wander and Brent Burns' Down In Paradise - two wonderful cuts that Mark treats like the gems they are. The rest of the album is made up of vintage Mulligan, with island delights like This Old Beach Town, Ain't Singing No Blues, and the dreamy Mexico Moonlight. You'll want to play them over and over again.
But the real treat here came to me as a very pleasant surprise. Everybody who knows The Crime Dog knows I'm a wife-and-family-first man, so this album touched me in my heart in a wonderful way. Thank you, Mark Mulligan, for the title cut Journey Around The Sun, the best song on the album. I can't get enough of it. And the same goes for I Want To Love You Like That and Looking At You. Wonderful songs all, and along with You, I can't help but think any of them would perform well with radio airplay.
Excellent production, crisp vocals, if you haven't already picked up a copy of Journey Around The Sun, then get your ass in gear and do so. The Crime Dog would never lead you astray. If you find this review intriguing, then let it make you wander on over to Mulligan's Island and do a little shopping.
A Final Note From The Crime Dog: Copying CDs might not put much of a dent in Jimmy's wallet, but can seriously cramp the style of local artists on limited budgets. Put the CD burner down and slowly step away........
